Local company launches innovative caregiving model for seniors:

Independent Seniors, LLC Also Offering Employment Opportunities for Caregivers Ages 50-70
CLIFTON PARK, NY (November 20, 2013) — Independent Seniors, LLC, a Clifton Park-based non-medical, in-home and away care and companionship service that unites caregivers between the ages of 50 and 70 with older seniors, was launched earlier this month.
Caregivers, known as “Junior Seniors,” provide non-medical services including meal preparation, light housekeeping, maintenance, transportation and laundry as well as 24-hour and Alzheimer’s/Dementia care on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis. Care recipients, called “Senior Seniors,” are typically 85 or older.
“The closeness in age between caregiver and receiver ensures that both parties share many life experiences, creating an environment of compatibility, freedom, dignity and independence,” said Co-founder and Managing Partner Jeff Fraser, noting that for many similar service providers, there is a disconnect between the age, interests and socio-economic backgrounds of caregivers and care recipients.
“This relationship-focused formula has flourished in Canada and has tremendous potential to succeed here in the Capital Region,” he added. “It’s also a very timely launch during National Caregivers Month.”
The company, the first of its kind locally to use the Junior/Senior model, is hiring compassionate adults interested in helping seniors preserve their independence. No experience is necessary and employees are covered by workers compensation and NYS disability insurance. All are subject to federal background checks and must be CPR-certified. Ongoing training is provided.
“Research has shown that seniors who receive home care reduce the frequency of their visits to doctors by 25 percent, which is why homecare is often referred to as ‘the safety net of healthcare,’” said Fraser, a former marketing executive with the Canadian Snowbird Association. “Our caregivers understand this statistic and don’t view their role within the company as ‘just a job’ or a ‘paycheck.’ They see the importance of giving back to the previous generation.”
Through Independent Seniors, LLC, family members also have access to daily updates on the condition and behavior of their loved ones in real time. Fraser has developed a proprietary mobile application for use on both iPhone and Android devices.
“We’re pleased to offer this application which will give security and peace of mind to family members, especially those who may live far away,” he said.
